Wait the Required TimeDig Safely Home< BackNext >

Wait for utility lines to be marked.
You must wait for National Grid and other utility companies to locate and mark their lines before you begin digging. The required wait times are below. (Allow more time for long, involved projects.)

  • Massachusetts and Rhode Island: Wait at least 72 hours excluding weekends and legal holidays.
  • New York: Wait at least two full working days excluding the day you call and weekends and legal holidays.

Expect responses for all utilities.
Expect a response from every facility operator confirming the absence or presence of utility lines in your work area. Document the responses. If you do not get a response, do not dig; notify 811.

Do not dig until all lines in your work area have been marked or you are notified that the area is clear of utility lines.
